Obituary for Reverend Daniel Bartholomew DuChez

Father Daniel Bartholomew DuChez, 77, a priest for 31 years, died Thursday, March 1, 2018 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

He was born on August 24, 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio to Louis and Margaret (O’Malley) DuChez. The example of his father helped him to decide to become a priest at the time of First Holy Communion. On May 25, 1986, Father DuChez was ordained a priest at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome by Pope Saint John Paul II for the Diocese of Ponce in Puerto Rico.

Father DuChez worked in the Roman Curia as a secretary aide for the director of Catholic Near East Welfare and he served as chaplain for Discalced Carmelite Nuns from 1988 to 1996 in Ontario, Canada and in Georgetown, California. In November of 1996, he worked in parishes in the Chippewa Falls area and, in 2002, he became a priest of the Diocese of La Crosse and served the spiritual needs of 18 healthcare facilities in the Chippewa and Eau Claire counties. Upon retirement, he moved to Paris, France and then to Holy Cross Diocesan Center in La Crosse. From September 2012 to the time of his death, he offered Mass nearly every Sunday at Benedictine Manor in La Crosse.

Father Daniel DuChez is survived by his siblings Louis (Rosemary) DuChez and Neil (Gayle) Du Chez; Nieces Ann Marie Duchez and Lynn (Michael) Bycko, Elizabeth (John) Turk, Cheryl Margaret (Michael) Pawlowski and by is nephews Neil (Rebecca) DuChez and Louis John DuChez and grandnephew Miles DuChez. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Timothy. He is survived by his siblings Louis (Rosemary) DuChez and Neil (Gayle) DuChez and their children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Christ the King Chapel within Holy Cross Diocesan Center in La Crosse on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at Christ the King Chapel one hour prior to the Mass. Most Reverend William Callahan will be the main celebrant and a luncheon will follow.

A Mass with final commendations will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday March 10, 2018 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Westlake, Ohio followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. Friends may call at the Church from 9:30 until the time of the service.

Fossum Funeral and Cremation Service of Onalaska and the McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home in Westlake, Ohio are assisting with the Arrangements.
